Framing Requirements for Standard Fine Art Division

MasterWorks maintains the highest of framing standards not just for show quality but also for the safety and security of your work. Therefore, inspection of all paintings will be thorough upon delivery to ensure standards have been met for the Division entered. MasterWorks cannot be held responsible for slipped or broken wire, screw or screw-eye pullout that causes damage to your work. Remember that quality framing is part of your entry and accepted paintings may be rejected for improper framing. Your cooperation will make the delivery day go smoothly. More importantly, it will make our already fine exhibits museum and gallery quality.

Framing to Gallery Standards means:

Quality Frames. Frames should be new or new-looking, wood, metal or resin of a quality to those offered in fine framing shops. Deliberately antiqued or distressed frames are acceptable if done in a professional manner. Please, no cheap-looking plastic-covered wood frames or frames that are coming apart or damaged in any way. MasterWorks is not responsible for frames that come apart.

Accepted work must be ready to hang with securely attached D-rings or strong screw-eyes.

Framing Wire is to be attached and must be the appropriate strength for the weight of the painting. Framing wire must peak 3-1/2 inches below top of frame under weight. See diagram below. Floral or single strand wire is not acceptable.

Backs of paintings:

All paintings should look neat.

Dust covers are to be used for all media framed under glass or plexi with the exception of those in metal frames.

Bumpers should be used and placed on the lower back corners of the frame. These protect the wall and help to keep the artwork hanging straight.

Attachments to Paintings

Work is to be labeled on the back with name, address, phone, title, price and medium.

Attachments to the back of the painting are allowed: business card, biography and certificate of originality.

No name plaques attached to the front of the frame are allowed.

All accepted paintings must be framed or wrapped to gallery quality standards. Gallery wrap canvas is that which is a minimum of 1 ½” deep.

Paint must extend neatly onto the sides of gallery wrapped canvases.

No glass or Plexiglass allowed.

Maximum outside frame or gallery wrap dimensions of accepted artwork are 72 inches high x 48 inches wide.

Pastel Framing

All accepted works must be framed, with glass, to gallery quality standards. The glass should be standard glass, AR glass (anti-reflective) or museum glass. Non-glare glass is prohibited. Plexiglass is allowed, but discouraged.

Mats are optional. If used, mats must be well cut and clean with no debris between the glass and mat.

Maximum outside frame dimensions of accepted artwork are 72 inches high x 48 inches wide.

Watermedia Framing

All accepted paintings must be framed to gallery quality standards with Plexiglass.

There should be no debris between the Plexiglass and painting.

All paintings must be matted with a clean and well cut mat.

There are no restrictions on the color of mats.

Maximum outside frame dimensions of accepted artwork are 72 inches high x 48 inches wide.
